Chlorine Dioxide

What is stabilized chlorine dioxide?

Stabilized chlorine dioxide is a solution that contains precursor compounds to chlorine dioxide (ClO2). When an activator is added, it releases chlorine dioxide and its benefits. The gas has been captured in an aqueous solution. By activating the stabilized chlorine dioxide, you create a reaction where some of the ClO2 gas is released but the part that remains in an aqueous state is chlorine dioxide.

But why is this process needed? Chlorine dioxide was discovered 1811 by Sir Humphrey Davey. He found that chlorine dioxide gas could not be compressed into cylinders and will in fact explode under conditions of high pressure and high concentration, making it very hazardous to use and ship. Because of this, many people did not want to use it. This is how chlorine gained its popularity. Yet chlorine dioxide very slowly gained recognition from the 1940’s to the 1960’s. During that time the production of chlorine dioxide was done almost exclusively with gas generators on site. These gas generators were large, hazardous, required special training and clearly were for industrial use. As the 1970’s came, chlorine dioxide technology advanced allowing for chlorine dioxide gas to be able to be created in water based solutions of precursor compounds. This became stabilized chlorine dioxide. A safe solution to ship and handle, making it available for everyone.

What is the difference between activated and non-activated?

Non-activated and activated stabilized chlorine dioxide have very different effects throughout your plant.

Unactivated stabilized chlorine dioxide works well as a bacteriostat and a deodorant. In the seafood industry this can be especially beneficial.

Activated stabilized chlorine dioxide is a solution that has a lowered pH. By doing this you are unleashing the power of chlorine dioxide. You will get the highest antimicrobial activity against a broad spectrum of microorganisms, bacteria, spore formers and viruses. Activated stabilized chlorine dioxide is effective over a pH range from 1 to 10 and has no corrosive potential, when used properly. Activated stabilized chlorine dioxide resists neutralization by organic load, does not produce toxic by-products and is very active against bio-film.

How effective is stabilized chlorine dioxide?

Stabilized chlorine dioxide is very effective against all kinds of microorganisms, bacteria, spore formers and algae. It is effective against Listeria, Salmonella, and E. coli, just to name a few. It does not take a large amount of product to get a 99.999% kill. Anywhere from 20 to 200 ppm will get a significant log reduction on a majority of bacteria. How easy is stabilized chlorine dioxide to use?

When used properly, stabilized chlorine dioxide is easy to handle. When using it unactivated, only one step is required: mixing the product with water.

When using it activated, only two steps are required: mixing the product with activator and then with water. No specialized training is needed to use this product. Simply follow the instructions on the label or the directions from your Pure Tech, Inc. representative. We give each company special formulations to fit their needs because each business is unique in the amount of resources it uses and the intended use of the product. It is important to remember that if people are not careful with the handling of ClO2, hazardous conditions can be created.

How is chlorine dioxide different than chlorine?

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2 ) and chlorine (CL) share the commonality of both having chlorine atoms, having the name chlorine in it and the fact that they both react by a process called oxidation. That is where the similarity ends. The mechanisms of their reaction and the by-products of that reaction are very different.

Chlorine reacts by adding chlorine atoms, particularly when reacting with organic compounds. This process is what causes trichloromethanes, dioxins, and trihalomethanes, which are carcinogens. Chlorine is also highly alkaline, making it have little antimicrobial activity.

On the other hand chlorine dioxide reacts with organics by adding oxygen. When this process is completed, the ClO2 is reduced to the chlorite ion, CL-, which is found in sea salt and table salt. Throughout the whole oxidation process, no toxic by-products are ever formed. That is something that chlorine can’t say. Chlorine dioxide, when used at proper concentrations, is much less corrosive than chlorine. Chlorine dioxide also requires much less product to kill bacteria and microorganisms. How does stabilized chlorine dioxide compare with other products?

Stabilized chlorine dioxide attacks microorganisms and bacteria and rips it apart. Because of this, bacteria cannot build up a defense toward it by mutating. What does this mean for you? This means that you don’t have to rotate stabilized chlorine dioxide with any other sanitizer or disinfectant. It also means that no matter how long you use it, stabilized chlorine dioxide will not lose its effect. But how does stabilized chlorine dioxide measure up going head to head with other products? Just look at the comparison tests and see for yourself. Effectiveness against microorganisms, Comparison of benefits
